Dancing between life and death, Lucien Shapiro’s art is rife with found objects, textures, cast forms, manipulations, raw substances, oddities and multiple personalities. Treating forgotten objects and memories as treasure, he creates a kingdom under which new life is born through sculpture. Shapiro’s work explores both the artist and viewer’s perception of identity, addiction, and time.

"The Wore" represents a new series of works and processes. Experimenting with materials such as “street diamonds” and new forays into paint and glitter, as well as the continuing manipulation of collected materials he is known for including bottle caps and Baggies, Shapiro takes the notion of loss and turns it into something beautiful. Forming crystalline structures that take months to create, his “street diamond” masks made from broken car windows shift the notion of victimhood that this violation represents into a new rendition…. that of growth and new form.

Conversely his masquerade masks form a linear narrative highlighting our self-imposed degradation. As beauty slowly fades in the face of our own habits and addictions, brass knuckles serve as protection against our own insecurities and fears.  While most Masquerades focus on fun and hopeful promise, these masks deal with the  artificial brightness that shields the average human expression.

Shapiro reminds us. “Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan Press On! has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” ― Calvin Coolidge
